MÖDLING

In the heart of Europe, barely 16 kilometres south of the federal capital Vienna - the "Pearl of the Vienna Woods", the town of Mödling. First mentioned in a document in 903, Mödling's history of more than 11 hundred years is characterised by an extremely changeable course full of highlights and strokes of fate. From the 12th century Mödling developed into a stately settlement as the seat of a collateral line of the Babenberg dynasty, earning Mödling the nickname "Babenberg Town". In the historic centre, sights from the Middle Ages to modern times are still visible today. Mödling was destroyed twice by the Ottomans and the population of Mödling was not spared two plague epidemics. At the beginning of the 19th century Mödling and its picturesque surroundings were discovered as an ideal "summer resort". This was followed by a blossoming of art and culture, which also determine Mödling's extraordinary rank in these fields to this day. In 1875 the market town of Mödling was elevated to the status of a city. During the Nazi regime Mödling became part of "Greater Vienna" in 1938 and only regained its status as a town and capital of the political district of the same name towards the end of the occupation in 1954. The traces of viticulture, which yields the best results here due to the excellent climatic and terrestrial conditions, also date back to the early Middle Ages. Thus, in addition to the numerous sights, the unique scenic attractions and the extensive cultural and gastronomic offerings, a visit to the "Heurigen" (idyllic winegrowers' taverns that "put out" several times a year and serve home-grown wines) is one of the countless reasons to visit Mödling. Thanks to the good transport connections, you can reach Vienna or one of the many excursion destinations in the Vienna Woods quickly and easily by car or by public transport.
